The masquerade customs in Bulgaria have deep roots and have been preserved as part of the folklore tradition, mainly associated with the holidays from Christmas to Easter. They are performed by masked men, known as survakari or kukeri, who use dances, bells, and ritual chants to drive away evil spirits and bring wishes for fertility and health. Over time, the tradition has evolved, incorporating new symbols and participants, including women and children. Today, masquerade games exist both in their authentic ritual form and as staged performances at festivals and carnivals in Bulgaria and abroad, with the city of Pernik being declared the "World Center of Masquerade Traditions and Rituals."
